Do you know how to answer the phone in Spanish?

Answering the phone can be difficult. . .

¿Qué?

And hard to understand. . .

¿Qué? ¿Qué?

Let's take a look at these two situations:

¿Aló?

Hola. ¿Está Julie?

Sí. Un momento.

¿Con quién hablo?

Sara.

Sí.

Julie! Al teléfono!

Estoy en el baño!

No. Está en el baño.

¿Quieres dejar un mensaje?

No, gracias.

Chao.

OK. Bueno, chao.

That was an informal situation.

In informal situations, when you pick up the phone, you usually say ¿Aló?

When you are the caller, and you want to ask for a specific person you will say: Hola. ¿Está ______?

So it would be Hola. ¿Está Julie?

Did you hear what she said?

She said ¿Con quién hablo? This means Who am I speaking with?

In an informal situation, if you ask the person to leave a message, you can say in Spanish ¿Quieres dejar un mensaje?

Now let's look at a formal situation:

Buenas tardes, WhyNotSpanish. Le habla María.

Buenas tardes, me comunica con Julie González, ¿por favor?

Sí, un momento. ¿De parte de quién?

Sara Torres.

Un momento.

¡Estoy en reunión!

¿Señora Torres? La señora González no se encuentra disponible.

¿Desea dejar un mensaje?

No, gracias. Hasta luego.

Muy bien. Hasta luego.

What you just watched there was a formal situation.

Notice that the person who picks up the phone says: Buenas tardes which is a formal greeting.

And she also says Le habla ______.

This means María speaking.

The person on the other side of the line says Buenas tardes, ¿me comunica con ______?

This basicly means Me I speak with ______?

In a formal situation you will usually hear the question ¿De parte de quién? , which means who am I speaking with?

Notice how she asks ¿Desea dejar un mensaje? This is a more formal way to say Would you like to leave a message?

Let's take a look at what we learned today.

So, if you're in an informal situation and you answer the phone, you will ask: ¿Aló? ¿Aló?

To ask who is calling, you can ask: ¿Quién habla? or ¿Con quién hablo?

This means Who am I speaking with?

When you want to speak to a specific person, simply ask: ¿Está ______? So it would be ¿Está Julie?

In a formal situation, though, you will need to use formal greetings, like Buenas tardes.

After the greeting, say who is speaking. Le habla ______. So it would be Le habla María.

If you are asking to speak to a specific person in a formal context you should ask: ¿me comunica con ______, por favor?

So it would be Me comunica con Julie Torres, ¿por favor?

To ask who is speaking you can ask: ¿De parte de quién?

In both formal and informal situations, if you want to ask the person to leave a message, you can say: ¿Quiere dejar un mensaje? Or you can also say: ¿Desea dejar un mensaje?
