Shopping in Spanish (How much?) ¿Cuánto cuesta? De compras en español y preguntar precios

Hola. ¿Qué tal?

Have you ever been shopping in a Spanish speaking country and had no idea what was going on?

Hola. How much is this?

No. No está a la venta.

What?

How much is this? ¿Cuánto?

¿Qué?

What?

¿Qué?

What?

Adiós.

Por favor señora. We are closing.

What?

Do you know how to go shopping in Spanish?

When you go shopping and need to ask for the price of things and both you and the vendor know what item you are talking about, you can simply ask: ¿Cuánto cuesta? This means How much?

This is a general question and it can be very useful.

Let's see an example.

Hola. ¿Cuánto cuesta?

No. No está a la venta.

AH. bueno. Gracias.

That went better.

But let's take a look at a few more words you can use to help in the shopping experience.

If you need to be more specific about what you need, you will have to add one more word to the question ¿Cuánto cuesta?

It all depends on how close you are to the object that you need.

Use Eso to say That or Esos to say Those if the items are far from you.

So the question would be: ¿Cuánto cuesta eso? or How much is that?

Or ¿Cuánto cuestan esos? which means How much are those?

If you are close or can touch the item, use esto or estos.

So, it would go like this: ¿Cuánto cuesta esto? or ¿Cuánto cuestan estos?

Those questions will help you better point out what you are wanting.

Let's take a look at another situation.

Hola. ¿Cuánto cuesta eso?

Cuesta 20 dólares.

Está en promoción.

Wow. Es muy caro.

Y ¿cuánto cuestan estos?

Estos cuestan 3 dólares.

Oh es barato.

Y ¿Cuánto cuesta esto?

Cuesta 25 dólares.

¿Tiene descuento?

No. No tiene descuento.

Muy caro.

Y ¿Cuánto cuestan esos?

¿Otra pregunta?

Este cuesta 25 dólares.

Es muy caro.

Are you going buy anything?

No. Just looking.

Ugh. ¡Dios mío!

In this situation they use eso, esto, estos and esos, but we also learned some new words about the price of items.

You heard Barato which means Cheap.

You also heard Caro which means Expensive.

You also heard Descuento which means Discount.

And you also heard Promoción which means Sale.

Let's go over what we learned today.

You can ask for the price of things by asking ¿Cuánto cuesta? which means How much?

If you want to be more specific about what you need, use the words eso, esto, esos and estos at the end of the question ¿Cuánto cuesta? .

Remember ¿Cuánto cuesta esto? means How much es this?

¿Cuánto cuesta eso? means How much is that?

¿Cuánto cuestan estos? means How much are these?

And ¿Cuánto cuestan esos? means How much are those?

We also learned some new words.

We learned the word Barato which means Cheap, Caro which means Expensive.

We also learned Descuento which means Discount and Promoción which means Sale.

That's it for today's lesson.

¡Chao!
